Week 2

Kia ora koutou,

Already the term is racing! We made a fantastic start to Term 2 last week - the kids were straight back into their good habits and routines. We made a start on multiplication and division in maths which everyone seems to enjoy  -  although there are a lot of time tables that need to be learnt over the next few weeks!

This week we are really looking forward to our trip to Pukaha Mount Bruce on Thursday. Thank to those of you who have offered your help. There are still a number of children who are yet to bring their $4 along to school. Please do this ASAP.

I'm looking forward to seeing you at the learning conferences tomorrow and Wednesday.

Term 2 class newsletter

A copy of the class newsletter sent home with your child today...

Kowhai
Meeting people halfway is the most significant trip we can take. We don't work for each other...we work with each other’

Welcome back to Kowhai for Term 2! I hope you enjoyed the holidays and are ready for another busy term. Kowhai kids set the standard very high in Term 1 – they are a very focused bunch of kids with fantastic work habits and a pleasure to be with.

Special congratulations must go to Jacob Watkins-Reid and Sarah Ward who received the special key competency awards in Solway’s reflection assembly last term.

Below is a brief outline of Term 2...
·     Attached to this newsletter is our Term 1 Oral Language timetable and talking topics. The timetable remains the same as Term 1. Children are welcome to bring along pictures/articles/props to aid their talk.

·     Our main focus in maths will be multiplication and division. One day a week we will be working on measurement.

·       Every Monday we will be doing personal experience writing with our major focus on writing arguments this term.

·       Our values this term are duty and consideration.

·       Our topic for Term 1 is Pukaha Mount Bruce. We are looking forward to our trip to Pukaha on Thursday 3rd May.

·       You can expect your child to bring home a reading book each night as well as their spelling list to practice. Spelling tests will be held on Fridays. Homework books will go home on even weeks this term and are expected to be returned on Friday. In addition, homework for Term 1 includes preparing for their talking day and practicing their basic facts. Please support your child with these things on a daily basis.

·       Our library day is Tuesday. Children need to bring their home library book back before our library session so they can choose another book to take home.

Don’t forget you are very welcome to visit us in Kowhai. Please do not hesitate to contact me via the school phone number (06 377 4850), email (sarahg@solway.school.nz) or of course in person.

See you soon!

Term 2, Week 1

Welcome back!

I hope you have had a wonderful holiday and have enjoyed the beautiful weather we have been lucky enough to have! Now it is time to gear up for Term 2…

We are straight back into it this week! Kowhai kids will be speaking about their holiday for oral language this week. The timetable remains the same with a new list of talking topics going home with the class newsletter during the week. Expect spelling words to arrive home on Monday that need to be learnt in preparation for testing on Friday. Homework will begin in week 2.

We will be starting multiplication and division (4 days a week) and measurement this week, which we are focusing on for maths in Term 2. We will also begin our writing focus of persuasive writing in the form of arguments.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday!
